Seeing my name in print was the moment I fell in love with writing.

I remember the moment like it was yesterday - the goosebumps and the adrenaline rush still vivid.

My first published words appeared in Absolute Leeds magazine, the headline boldly proclaiming, "College Girl: From Yorkshire to New England" right next to my name, just like a real journalist!

“That’s me!” I wanted to shout in excitement at the newsagent, running out the door with 10 copies, one for each family member.

I was 22 and home from my third year at university, which I spent at The University of Massachusetts, and the internship at The Yorkshire Post (Yorkshire’s very own daily newspaper) was a more creative and professional summer activity to my hosting job at TGI Fridays.

I loved it.

Words are power.

I've always found I can articulate myself better through the written word. Whether it's a handwritten card to my best friend, love letters scribbled on a bar coaster to my then-boyfriend (now husband), or a 10,000-word essay about the impact of world events on the fashion magazine industry. Writing has always felt more me.

Speaking in front of an audience or holding court at a party has never been my thing - (which is why I’m thankful I have a business partner who loves doing this)

Writing allows me to capture the essence of human experiences and relationships in a way spoken words never can. If I’m honest, I much prefer listening to talking and making an impact through what I’m wearing rather than what I’m saying.

Take me to the lake.

My love affair with America began when I was three years old. My parents packed up our life in Leeds and we literally swapped lives with another family who lived in a place I’d never heard of, Carson City, Nevada. My dad exchanged his teaching job, we traded homes and everything in it, and headed off on an adventure that set the course for the rest of my life.

I can still feel the prickle of the desert heat on my skin, the smell of Californian pines and the sound of possibilities from the constant noise of the slot machines.

At age three, I fell in love with America. The freedom, the excitement, the ambition of the dream - it all felt like home. A feeling which only grew stronger as I returned for summer holidays as a teenager. The cool girls in their cars, hanging out at the lake on the weekend - it was like being in a teen movie or in the pages of Sweet Valley High, a far cry from my life back in Leeds.

I lived for those summers and still do.

American Girl.

I obviously went on to study American Studies at The University of Hull, swayed by the fact that the four-year course included a third year in America, which I spent at The University of Massachusetts, in Amherst, where famous alumni include Richard Gere and Bill Pullman.

I lived a typical college campus life, studied Consumer Studies and Fashion Journalism, and did the whole frat party, spring break in Miami, kind of thing. Little did I know, Laura was also in the US as an undergrad, 1200 miles away at the University of Iowa.

While writing was probably always on the cards as a career, my sliding door moment came after graduation when I turned down an unpaid internship at Women’s Own magazine in New York for a paid job at a PR agency in East Yorkshire.

At the time, the prospect of racking up more student debt wasn’t appealing, so I took the more sensible option. This was the agency where I met Laura, five years later.

Meet cute.

There are some people in life you’re destined to meet and I’ve been fortunate to meet incredible people at all stages of my life.

Friendship is something I take seriously.

If you’re in my inner circle, I’m fiercely protective, and it’s a vibe I bring to our business and my role as a co-founder - listening and translating with best friend ears as clients share their stories, dreams and vulnerabilities. It’s what I was made to do.

I would never describe myself as ambitious but at age 30, while holding down a corporate communications role in the NHS and juggling new motherhood with a two-year-old, I set up my first online business and the UK’s first preloved wedding marketplace. I had an idea, saw a gap in the market and decided to give it a go. Because, why not?

With many lessons learned and my first foray into entrepreneurship, 11 years later, I exited the business with a healthy payout to boot, which I’ve since been told is a milestone achievement as a founder.

So maybe you could say I’m quietly ambitious.

The currency of connection.

Connection is everything, and that’s exactly what we do at Stories from Home. We help ambitious dreamers with big dreams grow their businesses, helping them illuminate their voices, stories and wisdom, so they can make an impact in the world and in their lives.

Words and stories are the foundations of a successful business, but they’re often overlooked. It drives me crazy!

Our mission is to make the world a better and more beautiful place through creative, clear and compelling stories. And even better, I get to do it with Laura, my biz soulmate and one of my bestest friends.

It’s funny because we both have a different recollection of the first time we met. I remember it as a work night out at Pizza Express with a mutual friend. I was instantly in awe of the fact Laura had spent four years in America and her love of adventuring and the great outdoors. “I hope we become good friends,” I said to myself.

15 years later, not only do we have a rock solid friendship, our profitable business is eight-years-old.

So if you’re here and you’re thinking you want to come along for the ride and get us alongside you to help your business shine, I promise it’ll be fun.
